Taking the first step toward a developmental evaluation can come with a mix of emotions; uncertainty, concern, and even a bit of relief. If you’ve found yourself wondering whether your child may benefit from additional support, you’re not alone, and you’re in the right place.
At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we’re here to make this process feel as comfortable, supportive, and clear as possible for both you and your child. From the moment you walk through our doors, our team is focused on creating an environment where you feel heard, informed, and confident in what comes next.
What the Evaluation Process Looks Like
To ensure we get a complete understanding of your child’s development, our autism evaluations are thoughtfully designed and typically take place over three visits.
It starts with getting to know your child.
During your first visit, we take time to learn about your child’s development, behavior, and medical history. We also listen closely to your concerns and observations, because no one knows your child better than you do.
Next comes the assessment.
During the second visit, a trained clinician will complete the ADOS-2 assessment. This is a structured, play-based evaluation that allows us to observe how your child communicates, interacts socially, and engages with the world around them. Many families are relieved to find that this portion feels more like guided play than testing.
Finally, we come back together.
In your follow-up visit, we’ll walk through the results with you, answer your questions, and talk through recommendations or next steps. If your child meets criteria for a diagnosis, we will provide the documentation needed to help you access therapies and support services.
Throughout this entire process, our goal is not just to evaluate, but to help you better understand your child and feel confident in how to support them moving forward.
What Is the ADOS-2?
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), is a widely used, standardized tool that helps clinicians evaluate communication, social interaction, and play. At Little Spurs Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, it’s administered in a way that feels natural and engaging for your child, often through play-based activities designed to encourage interaction in a comfortable setting.
The ADOS-2 can be used for individuals as young as 12 months through adulthood, depending on developmental level. Our trained clinicians ensure that each assessment is appropriate, supportive, and tailored to your child.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
Whether your child receives a diagnosis or not, our goal is the same: to equip you with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to support their growth and success in everyday life. We believe that helping children thrive starts with supporting their caregivers. That’s why we prioritize clear communication, education, and compassionate care throughout your entire experience with us. Every child’s journey is different, but one thing remains the same, you won’t have to navigate it alone. Our team is here to guide you through each step, answer your questions, and provide reassurance along the way.
