Learning Disabilities in Children & Teens

At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we provide comprehensive evaluations for children, teens, and young adults who may be experiencing learning challenges that affect their success at school and in everyday life. Our licensed clinical psychologist evaluates learning disabilities, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, to help families better understand their child’s unique learning profile and develop a plan for academic success.

What are Learning Disabilities?

Learning disabilities are neurologically based conditions that affect how a child processes, understands, or uses information. These challenges are not related to intelligence or motivation—instead, they impact specific academic skills such as reading, writing, or math.

Common learning disabilities include:

  • Dyslexia: Difficulty with reading, spelling, and understanding written language.
  • Dysgraphia: Difficulty with handwriting, spelling, and organizing written thoughts.
  • Dyscalculia: Difficulty understanding numbers, mathematical concepts, and problem-solving involving math.

With early identification and the right support, children with learning disabilities can build confidence, strengthen their skills, and thrive both academically and personally.

Signs & Symptoms of Learning Disabilities

Every child learns differently, but persistent struggles in one or more academic areas may indicate the need for an evaluation. Common signs include:

  • Difficulty learning letters, sounds, or sight words
  • Challenges with reading fluency or reading comprehension
  • Frequent spelling or writing errors
  • Poor handwriting or difficulty organizing written work
  • Trouble understanding numbers, counting, or basic math concepts
  • Difficulty remembering math facts or solving word problems
  • Frustration, anxiety, or avoidance related to schoolwork
  • Falling behind academically despite appropriate instruction and effort

If your child continues to struggle in reading, writing, or math, a comprehensive evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and provide a path forward.

How We Evaluate Learning Disabilities

At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we take a personalized, evidence-based approach to evaluating learning disabilities.

Our evaluation process may include:

  • In-depth clinical interviews with parents and caregivers
  • Review of medical, developmental, and educational history
  • Standardized cognitive and academic achievement testing
  • Assessment of reading, writing, language, and mathematical skills
  • Evaluation of attention, memory, and executive functioning when appropriate
  • Collaboration with schools or other providers, as needed

Our goal is to provide families with clear answers about their child’s learning strengths and challenges. Following the evaluation, we offer individualized recommendations that may include school accommodations, educational interventions, therapy referrals, and strategies to support your child’s continued growth and success.
