Early Childhood Developmental Milestones -

Early childhood is a time of rapid growth and exciting changes. Understanding developmental milestones can help parents and caregivers support their child’s growth while recognizing when additional guidance may be beneficial.

While every child develops at their own pace, there are common milestones that help track progress across physical, social, cognitive, and communication skills.

Early Infancy (1–6 Months)

During the first six months, babies begin developing strength and awareness of the world around them.

Common milestones include:

  • Lifting and holding up their head
  • Rolling over and pushing up during tummy time
  • Smiling at familiar people
  • Tracking moving objects
  • Cooing and babbling

Late Infancy & Toddlerhood (7–24 Months)

This stage is often filled with exciting firsts as children become more mobile and communicative.

Common milestones include:

  • Sitting independently and learning to walk
  • Showing preferences for favorite people and toys
  • Following simple directions
  • Pointing to objects
  • Using single words to communicate

Preschool Age (2–5 Years)

Preschoolers continue building independence while developing more advanced social, physical, and language skills.

Common milestones include:

  • Climbing, hopping, and running with coordination
  • Engaging in imaginative play
  • Playing alongside and with other children
  • Following multi-step directions
  • Speaking in longer, clearer sentences
