Starting preschool is an exciting milestone for children and families. As the first day approaches, many parents wonder: “Is my child ready?” “What skills do they need to be successful in a classroom setting?” We are here to help families asking those questions.
School readiness is about more than just knowing letters and numbers. Children also need skills like communication, social interaction, problem-solving, and the ability to participate in classroom routines.
At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we offer preschool readiness exams to help families better understand their child’s development and readiness for early education.
What Is a Preschool Readiness Exam?
A preschool readiness exam is an evaluation completed by our developmental specialists to assess important areas that support success in the classroom, including:
- Cognitive skills
- Language and communication skills
- Social skills
- Early academic skills
- Overall readiness for classroom learning
This proactive evaluation can help identify areas where your child may need additional support before starting preschool.
When Is a Preschool Readiness Exam Helpful?
Every child develops at their own pace, and a preschool readiness exam can provide valuable insight into your child’s strengths and areas for growth. Identifying potential challenges early allows families to address concerns and provide children with the tools they need to feel confident and successful in a school environment.
What Does the Exam Include?
Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics uses the Bracken School Readiness Assessment, which is designed for children ages 3 to 6 years old.
The assessment is completed individually, takes approximately 15 minutes, and evaluates skills such as:
- Colors
- Letters
- Numbers and counting
- Shapes
- Size comparisons
- Other early learning concepts
The assessment can be completed in both English and Spanish.
