Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) in Children & Teens

At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we provide expert evaluation and treatment for children, teens, and young adults (ages 10–21) experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Our goal is to help families better understand their child’s behavior and provide effective, compassionate care that leads to lasting progress.

What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)?

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a behavioral condition characterized by persistent patterns of defiant, uncooperative, and sometimes hostile behavior toward authority figures such as parents, caregivers, and teachers.

While occasional defiance is a normal part of development, ODD goes beyond typical behavior. These patterns are more frequent, more intense, and can significantly interfere with a child’s daily life, relationships, and school performance.

Signs & Symptoms of ODD

Children and teens with ODD may display a range of behavioral and emotional symptoms, including:

  • Frequent temper tantrums or anger outbursts
  • Arguing with adults or refusing to follow rules
  • Deliberately annoying others
  • Blaming others for their mistakes or behavior
  • Being easily irritated or overly sensitive
  • Persistent anger, resentment, or spiteful behavior

If these behaviors are ongoing and impact your child’s functioning at home, in school, or in social settings, it may be time to seek a professional evaluation.

How We Evaluate ODD

At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we take a comprehensive and individualized approach to diagnosing Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Our licensed clinical psychologist works closely with families to understand the full picture of your child’s needs.

Our evaluation process may include:

  • Clinical interviews with parents and caregivers
  • Behavioral assessments and standardized screening tools
  • Review of developmental, medical, and school history
  • Collaboration with teachers or other providers (when appropriate)

This thorough approach allows us to create an accurate diagnosis and a clear path forward.
