Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Children & Teens

At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we provide comprehensive evaluations and individualized care for children, teens, and young adults (ages 10–21) experiencing emotional and behavioral health challenges, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Our licensed clinical psychologist works closely with families to develop personalized, evidence-based care plans that support healing, resilience, and long-term well-being.

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop in children after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. This may include situations such as accidents, medical emergencies, loss of a loved one, abuse, violence, or other distressing experiences.

While it is normal for children to feel upset after a traumatic event, PTSD occurs when symptoms persist over time and begin to interfere with daily functioning, relationships, and emotional development.

Signs & Symptoms of PTSD in Children

Children and teens with PTSD may experience a range of emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms, including:

  • Re-experiencing the traumatic event (flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts)
  • Increased anxiety, fear, or constant worry
  • Mood changes such as sadness, irritability, or emotional outbursts
  • Avoidance of places, people, or situations that remind them of the trauma
  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares
  • Trouble concentrating or changes in school performance
  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities they once enjoyed

Symptoms can vary by age and may appear differently in younger children versus teens.

How We Evaluate PTSD

At Little Spurs Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, we take a compassionate and thorough approach to evaluating PTSD in children and adolescents. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where families feel heard and understood.

Our evaluation process may include:

  • Clinical interviews with the child and caregivers
  • Trauma-informed behavioral and emotional assessments
  • Review of medical, developmental, and family history
  • Collaboration with schools or other providers when appropriate

This comprehensive evaluation helps us better understand your child’s experience and determine the most effective path forward.
